Glasgow, Scotland is still in the running for the only super casino license that is available but there is continued opposition to the idea of a super casino. There are six other sites in the United Kingdom vying to win the Las Vegas style super casino mega resort. They are Blackpool, Cardiff, London, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield. The resort could possibly offer more square footage than the mega resorts in Las Vegas and would have more than twelve hundred gaming machines. It would provide more than three thousand jobs for the area and result in about ₤215 million in revenues for the area.
Opposition to the super casino is based on the social problems it is expected to cause, mainly gambling addition. This is what the Liberal Democrats are basing their opposition on. Since approximately three percent of the population already frequent casinos, and since gambling is legal in the U.K. it is not clear why the super casino should be the source of social problems like gambling addition.
They claim they already have problems with gambling and debt and drinking. Instead of harping on the social problems, they should concentrate on the social benefits associated with jobs and revenues to the area and increased tourism. These are factors that benefit an economy.
The deregulation and new gaming laws that go into effect in a few months will result in increased gambling throughout the kingdom. Acquiring a Las Vegas style mega resort in the area should be a feather in one’s cap. |
